Chaga tea is made from chaga mushroom, Inonotus obliquus, that typically grows on birch trees in the colder climates across different parts in the Northern Hemispheres such as China, Finland, Russia, Canada, and in the upper northeast United States including Michigan and Minnesota.
Chaga appears as a highly concentrated black mass of mycelium known as sclerotium that resembles a burnt charcoal and protrude from the birch trees. For centuries, chaga has been consumed in the East, but it has gained a wide popularity in the West due to its recognized numerous health benefits, most typically as tea.
The chaga mushroom is considered a medicinal mushroom in Russian and Eastern European folk medicine.
Chaga contains plenty of antioxidants such as the Beta-D-Glucans and phytosterols that help in stabilizing the response of the body’s immune system. Studies indicate chaga acts a natural Biological Response Modifier (BRM) since it allows the activation of immune cells to fight against a wide range of viral, bacterial, and fungal infections. Consumption of chaga tea enhances increased antioxidants and enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SODs) that help in protecting the body against oxidative stress by neutralizing the circulation of free oxygen radicals. As a result, this prevents the potential cellular and DNA damage that may lead to the development and spread of cancerous cells.
In addition to antioxidants, the chitin walls of chaga contain structural polysaccharides, a source of energy, to maintain the normal functioning of organs such as the heart, liver, brain, and among others. The antioxidant properties such as the Beta-D-Glucans support the metabolic processes of the liver to allow the conversion of fats and carbohydrates for energy, which regulates the levels of blood sugars and low-protein lipoprotein (LDL) like cholesterol in the body. Moreover, chaga contains triterpenes (betulin and betulinic acid) that take part in normalizing the levels of cholesterol and blood sugar; thus, promoting the overall health by reducing the risks of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, atherosclerosis, and among others.
Studies reveal that chaga sclerotium scores the highest oxygen absorbance capacity (ORAC) due to the high levels of levels of antioxidants. In particular, Chaga sclerotium has massive amount of polyphenols within the natural black pigment referred to as melanin. The high levels of antioxidants in melanin help to protect skin cells and tissues from damage, inflammations, and infections; thus, maintaining healthy skin, as well as enhancing anti-aging effects.
